Description:
Thermodynamics systems and laws of thermodynamics:
Intensive and extensive variables, equations of state of gas, Partial derivatives and perfect differential. 1st, 2nd and 3rd Laws of thermodynamics. Entropy as a thermal state variable. Reversible processes. Entropy as a function of intensive and extensive variables. Entropy of a monatomic gas. Entropy of mixing simple thermodynamic systems: The Joule Thompson experiment; blackbody radiation.

The Thermodynamic Potentials: Internal energy, Entropy, Helenboltz and Gibbs functions. The Flaxwell's relations and related equations and calculations. Entropy and spontaneous flow.

Phase Transitions: 1st and 2nd order phase transitions. Clausius - Claypeyron equation.

Assessment is by assignments and examination.
